History

Drupal was founded by Dries Buytaert on May 18, 2000 and it was originally intended to be a message board.

Requirements

1. Web server: Apache 2.4.7 or higher, or any other web server with proper PHP support.
2. Database:
   • MySQL 5.7.8 (or greater)
   • MariaDB 10.3.7 (or greater)
   • Percona Server 5.7.8 (or greater)
   • PostgreSQL 10 (or greater)
   • SQLite 3.26 (or greater)
3. PHP version: at least PHP 8.1. PHP 8.1.6 is recommended.

Hosted/self-hosted

Drupal sites can be hosted in an on-premise data center or private cloud.

Cost

Drupal is free of charge.

User base

1.7 million live websites on the Internet use Drupal. Drupal 7 will officially reach its End of Life on 5 January 2025.
